2019 – PICA Medical Program in Chad

Background: There are more than 40 million people who partially lost their eyesight in Africa, 75% of those cases are curable. Due to the cost and shortage of ophthalmologists, not everyone can afford the treatment and recover their sight.
Purpose: Aiming to provide healthcare services free of charge for thousands of people who have vision impairment or poor vision due to cataract in the Islamic world, especially in Africa, in the target countries of the Alliance to Fight Avoidable Blindness.
Outputs: Curing thousands of cataract cases in the target countries of the Alliance to Fight Avoidable Blindness. In Chad mission in July 2019, the number of cataract surgeries performed is 1,016.
Activities: Performance of hundreds of surgeries per day. Providing post-surgery treatment eye drops and medical glasses.
Working Framework: Multiple missions per year, involving Palestinian ophthalmologists, in direct coordination with Tunisian Nadi Al-Bassar and Islamic Development Bank.
