WINDHOEK – PICA implemented its first development program pertaining to water management in Namibia, in cooperation with the Embassy of the State of Palestine to South Africa and other competent Namibian authorities.
Aiming to enhance water management and supply in Namibia, the program’s main purpose is to reduce the prevailing water scarcity in the country and the persisting drought.
The program was conducted few months after H.E President Hage Geingob declared a drought state of emergency, which required the intervention of the international community to take drought contingency measures and provide support to the Government of Namibia.
PICA Director General, Imad Al-Zuhairi, stated that this mission is a reflection of the deeply rooted relations between the State of Palestine and Namibia that has for so long supported the State of Palestine and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, national independence and sovereignty.
The mission consists of field assessment of several dams in Namibia, and technical meetings with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, the National Disaster Management Committee and a number of Namibian universities.
As water resources management has called for an adoption of new approaches towards the management of the limited and ever pressured water resources, the program aims also at developing a strategic plan to face drought and finding specific mechanisms for how to develop advanced means of soil conservation and access to water.
PICA mission contributes to Namibian efforts in finding effective practices in the management, provision and safeguarding of water resources.
