2023 – PICA’s Second Medical Program in Lebanon

Background: In December 2022, the Palestinian International Cooperation Agency conducted its first medical program at Al Hamshari hospital, which aimed to conduct cornea transplant surgeries. Following this successful mission, we received an official request to conduct additional programs at Al Hamashari hospital in different medical specializations based on the medical needs. After an assessment, we identified needs in the pediatric, vascular, knee & hip replacement fields. Therefore, PICA decided to launch “Al Wafa’a” campaign to support the medical needs in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, through deploying medical delegations on a quarterly basis to support the medical needs in the hospitals. 
Purpose: Support the medical efforts of Al Hamshari Hospital.
Outputs: 1-PICA surgeons performed hundreds of medical screenings and examinations to choose the patients for the surgeries.
2- Conducting 66 surgeries in the pediatric, vascular and knee & hip replacement field.
3- Providing medical consultations to the doctors at the medical departments during the mission.
4- Conducting a training session to transfer the Palestinian knowledge in the anesthesia domain.
Activities: 1- Conducting technical visits to Al Hamshari hospital to prepare for the surgeries.
2- Meetings with the director general of Al Hamshari hospital and the medical crew.
3- Follow up medical checkups after the surgeries were conducted to all the patients in order to monitor their medical status.
4- Conducting visits to the Haifa hospital (Burj Al Barajneh RC) & Tal Al Z’atar hospital (Al Rashediyeh RC) to assess their medical needs & discuss future potential cooperation.
Working Framework: Technical Cooperation-Enhancing bilateral and south-south cooperation through transferring the Palestinian knowledge in the medical field to support the health sector in Lebanon.
